Situational Awareness

Being aware of one’s situation and environment is one of the fundamental skills of nearly all forms of life. And while it is a survival technique that has bode well for our species, the comforts of modern society have slowly eroded it from our daily life. So with that in mind, how do we maintain this skill? We practice it. For some, these points will sound redundant. So I apologize in advance.

Small actions that can make a difference include checking your corners as you pass an alley or intersection. As simple as it may sound, our parents were right when they taught us to “look both ways”. When you are at a sporting event or festival, be aware of what security is in place. Be sure to look above you as there is plenty to be seen that hides in plain sight. Does the event have lookouts/snipers on the rooftops? Are there undercover agents amongst the crowd? Are metal detectors/screening devices at every entrance; and if so, what are their capabilities?

Now I am not suggesting that you insist that you sit facing the entry point of every restaurant or bar you visit. Nor am I suggesting that you constantly “scan your sectors” when walking down the street. After all, our primary goal should always be to pose as the average citizen; and shifty eyes or overly attentive actions will be counterproductive.

The value of this awareness is two part. First, it provides an added layer of security for yourself and those around you as you may be able to pick out suspicious activity. Second, as you begin to notice trends in modern security, you will become more aware of their weaknesses. #FindYourHill
