Yard/Garage Sales
Yard sales are severely underrated as a way to connect with those in your area, and to find useful tools. Especially in a time where you can have anything you want delivered in 48 hours. While this piece of advice may sound like a bit of a stretch, I have found it useful from time to time.
-You never know what you may find. I have found spare gas tanks, old power tools, and wool blankets for “dirt cheap”. I know friends who have found quality camping gear and mountain bikes for a fraction of what they cost at retail value.
-Depending on what you find, a conversation can be struck. When talking to the seller, you may find that you have similar interests. This opens the door for a discussion and possible friendship that you would have otherwise missed out on. Along with that, they may have other items for sale that they did not feel comfortable placing out in their yard.
-It builds a sense of community. Rather than buying things online at an inflated price, you exchange money for goods in the most basic of ways. Both parties win and we retain a sliver of the fundamental barter system that humans have been utilizing since our beginnings.
Like every approach, this is not a magic bullet and is very hit-or-miss. Regardless, I hope that it encourages you to take an extra 10 minutes of your time to stop the next time you see a yard sale in your area. #FindYourHill
