Local Law Enforcement
While I will be the first to criticize modern law enforcement, it is valuable to know the capabilities of your local police department. And, if possible, know some of the officers/leadership within it. Like hospitals, you should know the answers to the following questions.
What is their average response time? Has their funding/staff been cut? Have many officers left the force in recent years; and if so, why? Do you have friends on the force who place their morals over their paycheck? Does the leadership follow the oaths they took or the politicians in office?
Although as a whole, law enforcement, especially in major cities, is extremely corrupted, there are still good individuals on the force. Being friends with those individuals is valuable as they will share their frustrations with you and you can better understand what is happening behind closed doors. And even more, getting involved in the election process for your county sheriff is imperative to put strong leadership in place. Also, knowing their response time may be essential in the event you need to call on them for assistance; or in the opposite scenario, are having them called on you.
If you have a good relationship with your local law enforcement, and they have true moral compasses, then you are in a good place. If you do not, and they cannot be trusted, then knowing their capabilities, how they operate, and what their reputation among other neighbors is, can be equally valuable. As the saying goes, “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.” #FindYourHill
